CREST Skills Seminar hosted by Bishop Grosseteste University

Thursday 4th and Friday 5th December 2014, Lincoln

Doctoral training now requires all candidates to have some working knowledge of data handling and analysis using software packages such as SPSS and NVivo.  What better place to learn than at Bishop Grosseteste University situated in the heart of the cathedral quarter of the historic city of Lincoln.

This two day CREST Skills Seminar provides opportunities to reflect on the so-called quantitative-qualitative paradigm wars and their competing or complementary research design considerations before getting some hands-on experience of using SPSS (numbers) and NVivo (words, images and artefacts) to analyse real-life data sets and other information sources and exploring possibilities and potential for your own research. Examples will be drawn from education but the practices and principles are universal. Opportunities may be available for you to analyse your own work if time permits.

By the end of the two-day package you will be better placed to consider and use SPSS and NVivo for yourself and confident in accessing and making sense of the wider body of research literature that may report sometimes technical findings.  Some prior reading will be required.

This seminar will be free to attend for all researchers working at CREST member institutions. However, travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of attendees. There will be some Bed and Breakfast spaces available at the University; Lincoln also has two Premier Inns, which can offer an alternative low-cost option.

Spaces on this seminar will be limited, so please email rachel.brockhurst@guildhe.ac.uk by Friday 1st August to register for the seminar. Please indicate whether or not you would like to apply to stay in one of the rooms at the University, or if you prefer to sort out your own accommodation in Lincoln.

As an added attraction, the seminar will take place during the Lincoln Christmas Market, so when you are not participating in your seminar you take in the wonderful cathedral town, all decked out for the holidays.
