The first CREST Sandpit, working in collaboration with the NCCPE, aims to inspire the sharing of ideas between colleagues who work in different sectors and disciplines and between researchers and practitioners.

Our primary focus is on enabling collaboration and relationship development between the different attendees. The sandpit is an experiment for CREST members and others to learn how to work best together.

Our overall theme is focused around societal or industrial challenges within communities and how they can be addressed at a UK wide level. We are particularly interested in:

  • How to apply and generate knowledge within communities to lead to broader UK change
  • How (local) challenges can be addressed through academic, nonprofit and businesses working together

Thirteen CREST member institutions are supporting this initiative.

Output & Outcome

As a result of the CREST Sandpit, we will be seeking to providing seed funding for several project teams to work up their ideas from the event.

Successful projects will be announced by the end of January 2018 and will run from March 2018 until March 2019. A report and participating in a knowledge-development event when the projects finish are expected outputs of the event.

We also envisage one eventual outcome of the sandpit and the initial research is expected to be a major collaborative funding bid to the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund or other similar funding streams.

Costs (non CREST members)

We are able to cover accommodation and catering costs for all non-academic participants due to the generous support of CREST institutions.

We hope this encourages a wide range of non-academic organisations to apply and participate in this unique experience.
