Somatic Shifts: the body and beyond in creative and critical research

Research Student Conference and Exhibition

University for the Creative Arts – Rochester Campus

Conference date: 29 March 2017

Exhibition dates: 13 March – 5 April 2017

 

Over the course of this one-day conference and associated exhibition, research degree students will critically engage with a variety of methods and practices in creative art and design research that examine the limitations and potential of the human body. The last session will take place in the Zandra Rhodes Gallery in the context of the accompanying exhibition, followed by an evening reception.

UCA invites papers on this subject area, and others that might include, but are not limited to:

  • the body and pain
  • the boundaries, surfaces and limits of the body
  • the body and performance
  • the body in placemaking

The objective of this conference is to exchange possibilities and deductions about how art and design research can re-envision the body’s capacity to exist and disappear in the world. In what ways can this conference bring attention to areas that are not frequently acknowledged within wider research communities? Can artistic interventions and architectural designs create more cohesive, or alienating, experiences and perceptions of reality?

Conference – Call for Papers (open to UCA and CREST member institutions)

Research students are invited to submit a title and 200-word abstract outlining a 15 minute presentation on an aspect of their research, which relates to the theme of the conference. Please also supply at least one JPEG image of your work (minimum 300 dpi) which may be used in the conference publicity material.

Deadline for abstracts: Midnight 18th December 2016 

 

Research Student Exhibition (open to UCA students only)

UCA Research students are also invited to submit work relating to their current research to be included in the associated exhibition at the Zandra Rhodes Gallery. Students should submit a brief proposal of up to 200 words and up to three JPEG images (minimum 300 dpi) to describe the work to be exhibited.

Deadline for exhibition proposals: Midnight 18th December 2016
