The conference has been organised by The Institute for Sport, Exercise, Recreation and Wellbeing (ISERW) at Bucks New University in partnership with Aylesbury Vale District Council, Buckinghamshire County Council, and Chiltern Clinical Commissioning Groups.

It will feature lectures and presentations delivered by an international team of academics specialising in health and wellbeing, gerontology, projects with older people, physical activity, sport and leisure.

The event will also showcase wellbeing and exercise initiatives organised across Buckinghamshire by Movers & Shakers, which is a health and wellbeing project run by Buckinghamshire County Council and the Chiltern Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Activities will include Jazzercise, Tai Chi and Zumba Gold. Creative workshops will also be on offer to demonstrate the benefits of keeping physically and mentally active.

Barbara Humberstone, Professor of Sociology of Sport & Outdoor Education at Bucks New University, said the event was a ‘fantastic opportunity’ for everyone to find out ways to enjoy life and stay healthy as they get older. She said: “This conference is about linking academic perspectives with practical ways diverse members of the community, in particular older people, can discover how to stay fitter longer. “We will have plenty of activities from the Movers & Shakers health and wellbeing initiative in Buckinghamshire and also a lot of advice and information on how to stay active.

According to Dr Maria Konstantaki, Senior Lecture at the University’s Department of Sports Management, “We also have fitness MOTs and Health MOTs (for example assessment of body mass index, blood pressure, lung function) so there should be an informative, vibrant and fun atmosphere. We would love as many people as possible to come along and take advantage of all that the day offers.”

Olga McBarnett, who leads the Movers & Shakers project, said: “This event will showcase the many activities available for older people, encourage them to learn something new and promote the benefits of our clubs. “Movers & Shakers is about giving people confidence, helping them interact with others and to be healthier and happier. This conference is the perfect platform to show what we do.”
