THE science of how cheetahs can sprint nearly three times the speed of Olympic champion Usain Bolt has been revealed by a senior lecturer from the University of Chichester.

Dr Penny Hudson, of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, studied the anatomy and biomechanics of the large felines to explain how they reach speeds of up to 62 miles-per-hour.

Her research, which was conducted at the Royal Veterinary College’s famed Structure and Motion Laboratory, is now being applied to elite athletes and sprinters.

It was also featured across the front cover of the latest Sport and Exercise Scientist magazine: the official publication of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

Dr Hudson, is currently working on improving the block starts of athletes and investigating individual musculoskeletal adaptations to improve performance.
