To mark the University’s 175th anniversary, this year applications are being sought for 10 fully-funded doctoral research studentships.

Applications to study are invited within the following departments: Archaeology; Education; English, Creative Writing and American Studies; History; Performing Arts; Psychology; School of Media and Film; Sport and Exercise; Theology, Religion and Philosophy; and the Winchester Business School.

The University’s roots date back to 1840 when it was founded by the Church of England as the Winchester Diocesan Training School. It became King Alfred’s College in 1928, and in 2004 was granted degree awarding powers, becoming the University of Winchester.

“We are thrilled to announce these new studentships,” said Professor Simon Jobson, Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Winchester. “As a values-driven institution, the University is committed to the production of high-quality research that has regional, national and international impact. We encourage students to join our dynamic research community.”

Students need to submit a stand-out research proposal with a clear methodology and rationale. A shortlist of 20 applicants will be interviewed from the end of April, with funded places being allocated to those planning the best research projects.

Applications are welcome from UK and European Union students with a good first degree in a relevant subject and a Masters degree (or equivalent professional experience). Awards cover full-time academic fees for UK/EU students, a maintenance grant of £13,863 and £500pa of research expenses.

The deadline for written applications is Friday 13 March. Find out more about the qualifications for entry and how to apply at www.winchester.ac.uk/175studentships
