From time to time Newman University provides studentships leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). This is as part of Newman’s continued commitment to developing research and scholarship, and building on the academic strength of its subject areas through a sustained programme of investment. Studentships cover the payment of tuition fees for UK and EU/EEA students, and may include a subsistence grant.

Newman University aspires to be recognised regionally, nationally and internationally for the quality of its research and scholarship. As part of the University’s continued commitment to supporting the most promising students to undertake in depth postgraduate research, applications are invited for three fully-funded PhD Studentships for three years (full-time) for UK or EU students. The Studentship includes a subsistence grant in line with the recommendations of the UK research Councils (currently £13,863 p.a. for 2014-15) with all fees paid.

The University supports world-leading and internationally recognised research across a broad range of disciplines (including the Human Sciences, Sport, Psychology, Education and the Humanities) and applications are welcome in any of these areas. Current Readers and Professors will particularly welcome applications on:

Applicants are expected to possess a Master’s Degree with Distinction, or with a Distinction in the Dissertation, from a UK University, or an equivalent qualification.

The key criteria for selection and appointment will be:

  • Record of academic excellence of the candidate;
  • Availability of supervisory expertise and capacity;
  • Quality of project proposal;
  • Research skills and training;
  • Spread of recruitment.
