This event, presented by the National Centre for the Study and Prevention of Violence and Abuse (NCSPVA) at the University of Worcester, considers how health is responding to domestic violence in practice and also looks at research on domestic violence and health.
Domestic violence is a complex issue that has a devastating impact on those who experience it. Government strategy and policy recognises domestic violence as an issue that is best addressed through multi-agency working but clearly states that it is a public health issue because it has an impact on the physical and mental health of those who experience it; and costs the healthcare system an estimated £283million per year (Walby, 2009).
In February 2013, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published guidance which outlines how health services, social care and the organisations they work with can respond effectively to domestic violence. One year on; this event considers how health is responding to domestic violence in practice and also looks at research on domestic violence and health; conducted at the NCSPVA by students who are also health professionals.
