Leading experts in renewable energy technology are joining forces with the University of Cumbria to run a series of short courses in wind energy.

These courses will feature the expertise of renowned academic and industry experts who will be presenting on the latest cutting-edge technologies for this major renewable energy source.

Professor Xiongwei Liu, Chair of Sustainable Engineering at the University of Cumbria, will be leading the courses alongside Dr Wenxian Yang, Lecturer in Offshore Renewable Energy at Newcastle University; Sally Shenton, Director of Generating Better a consultancy firm focused on delivering practical support to the renewable energy industry; and Stephan Werdefroy, Operations Manager for Wind Prospect Operations.

The first of the 13 one-day courses takes place on 24 September and is open to members of the public who have no prior knowledge of wind energy, with subsequent courses open to those requiring a more in-depth understanding such as wind energy system designers, manufacturers, installers, consultants, developers, operators and suppliers.

The courses take place at the university’s site at Energus, Workington and cover a range of topics such as wind resource assessment, wind turbine aerodynamics, wind turbine design and offshore wind project development.

Professor Liu, a pioneer in the field of wind energy engineering, said:  “The University of Cumbria is leading the way in wind energy education in the region through our excellent in-house expertise in collaboration with world class experts in the wind energy industry.

“Wind energy is a major renewable energy source for the UK and wind energy projects, both on-shore and off-shore, offer a great source of long-term energy security at an affordable cost.

“To increase understanding in this important area we have gathered the leading experts from both academia and industry for the delivery of these courses.

“We are delighted to welcome these esteemed guests to the heart of Britain’s Energy Coast here in Cumbria.”
