Dr Stephen Bullivant at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, was keynote speaker at the European Society of Catholic Theology’s congress in northern Italy last week.

The conference, held every two years, attracted over 200 delegates from all across Europe and beyond. This year’s theme was ‘Go in Question: Religious Languages and Secular Languages’. Dr Bullivant’s lecture, entitled ‘”I call you (Facebook) Friends”: New Media and the New Evangelization’, drew on his ongoing research at St Mary’s into the Church’s engagement with secular thought and culture.

Earlier in the summer, Dr Bullivant, who is Senior Lecturer in St Mary’s School of Education, Theology and Leadership, also gave the opening address at a two-day Theology and Power symposium held in Manila, Philippines. His paper discussed the Second Vatican Council’s teaching on the Church in light of the sexual abuse crisis. This was the third event organised as part of the Redeeming Power: Overcoming Abuse in the Church and Society project, following conferences at St Mary’s last September and Bratislava in October.
