Houses of Parliament

Professor Emile Bojesen, Director of Research and Innovation at the University of Winchester, has been elected as the new Director of GuildHE Research. He will take up the role at the end of January 2025.

GuildHE Research (GHER) is the research consortium for specialist, vocational, and technical higher education institutions, a sub-association of GuildHE, a representative body for higher education in the UK. GHER works with its 31 diverse members to influence research policy, support positive research cultures and effective research strategies, and develop shared infrastructure and training to drive forward excellent research with impact.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Bojesen said “GuildHE Research is engaged in the extremely valuable task of positively influencing policy that affects specialist, vocational, and technical higher education institutions. The consortium also works to help its member institutions develop stronger research cultures, strategies and infrastructures. The University of Winchester has benefited significantly from our membership and I am delighted to support the further of this work by taking on the role of Director.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to make a contribution through leading on strategic development and representing and promoting the work of GuildHE Research and its member institutions during my tenure.”

An elevated profile for members’ research

Professor Bojesen takes over from current GHER Director Professor John Strachan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at Bath Spa University, who will have held the post for 5 years.  Reflecting on his period as Director, Professor Strachan said:

“I am incredibly proud of all that we’ve accomplished at GuildHE Research over the past few years, in influencing research and innovation policy to support our sector, fostering a supportive environment for research in member institutions, and collaborating on research and knowledge exchange joint projects.  It has been a privilege to lead such a dynamic and dedicated community.

I am confident that under Professor Emile Bojesen’s leadership, GuildHE Research will continue to grow and thrive. Emile brings with him a vision that will undoubtedly shape the future of our organisation in new and exciting ways.”

Rachel Persad, Head of Research Policy at GuildHE has led the consortium alongside Professor Strachan. Commenting on behalf of GuildHE and all it’s members she said:

“We sincerely thank Professor Strachan for his unerring commitment and valuable insights. He has led the consortium through a time of change in the sector, including supporting the team and members during Covid-19 and navigating challenges in UK politics.

The Consortium has expanded under his leadership, and has achieved policy changes, particularly to research funding and open access, that directly benefit our members and institutions like them. Our elevated profile within the UK research landscape has positioned us as a critical voice in debates about the value of research.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Bojesen to the role. Emile has been an active contributor to our policy positions and has worked with us on our sell-out Doctoral Festival held at the University of Winchester earlier this year. It is testament to the collegiality, strength, and enduring nature of the consortium that we welcome Emile as our sixth Director, and we look forward to seeing what more we can achieve together in the years ahead.”
