The Royal Agricultural University are delighted to congratulate Professor Toby Mottram on being highly commended in the Practice with Science Award at the Oxford Farming Conference 2014.

Professor Mottram came highly commended for the eBolus, which accurately and wirelessly measures the rumen pH in cows. The eBolus was developed by design engineer Seonaid Nimmo of eCow Ltd., founded by Professor Mottram in 2007, and has since been sold across the world. The innovative piece of technology is designed to help dairy farmers improve cow rations, and can be used in experiments to develop new feeds.

The Royal Agricultural University has recently been working with eCow and Mole Valley Farmers to determine the commercial benefits of using the farmBolus. The results have been overwhelmingly positive; with one farmer saving £10,000 in food over two months and another increasing his milk yields by five litres per day.

Two RAU students are currently conducting dissertation studies with farmBolus to increase knowledge of how to use this tool to monitor and control diets.  The Royal Agricultural University is unique in the sector by being able to use the latest technology, developed by a member of staff, for improved research and husbandry.

The Practice with Science Award, run in partnership with the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) and funding support from AB Agri, recognise applied scientific work that has resulted in valuable benefits to the agricultural industry, particularly improving on-farm practice. The award encourages innovation in technology that leads to improvements in technical or economic efficiency.

Award winners were announced at the Oxford Farming Conference on Wednesday 8 January.
