‘Lace: the transgressive thread’, the inaugural conference of the Lace Research Network, will take place on 16 May 2014 at UCA Farnham.

A call for papers closes on 31 January 2014. Details of the call are available here and can also be downloaded from the network’s website.

The two keynote speakers are:

Piper Shepard, artist, researcher and Chair of the Fibers Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The conference is linked to an exhibition of hand cut lace by Piper Shepard at the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham, from 6 to 24 May 2014

Lesley Millar MBE, Professor of Textile Culture at UCA and curator of many groundbreaking textile exhibitions including ‘Lost in Lace’ at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 2011, which included a major work by Piper Shepard, and ‘Cloth and Memory’ at Salts Mill in 2012 and 2013.

The remainder of the programme will be announced on the website once the speakers have been selected.

Booking for the conference will open in February 2014.

It is anticipated that the chosen papers will be published after the conference in some form.
