The University of Winchester will look at the devastating impact conflict has had on children around the world at a conference between 4-6 September.

The 5th International Children of War Conference, organised by the University’s Faculty of Business, Law and Sport, coincides with the 20th anniversary of War Child – the UK charity founded to work with and raise awareness of young people caught up in hostilities.

“The 2013 International Children of War Conference aims to encompass both historical and current case studies, as well as draw on conflict areas from around the world,” said Dr Christine Ryan, conference organiser and Lecturer in Politics and Global Studies at the University of Winchester. “The significance of the conference is that it offers a multi-disciplinary platform, enabling academic engagement with the topic of how children experience and process conflict.”

Delegates will attend from across the UK, Europe, USA, Africa, the Middle East and Asia to discuss case studies dating from the 1940s to the modern day.

Rob Williams, CEO of War Child, will open the conference with his presentation An Unwanted Truth: putting a spotlight on sexual violence against children in conflict. Other speakers from academia and the frontline will share reports on a range of subjects, from child soldiers in Uganda to Second World War evacuees and those living in the aftermath of the Vietnam war.

The 5th International Children of War Conference is being held at West Downs, University of Winchester, Romsey Road, Winchester SO22 5HT from 4-6 September. For more information and to book a place visit www.winchester.ac.uk/events
