The University of Winchester has awarded its very first professional doctorate to the director of a Hampshire music charity helping to raise young people’s aspirations.

Dr Peter Beadell, founder of Panjazz International, will receive the inaugural Professional Doctorate in Contribution to Public Work after demonstrating significant innovation within his professional field.

The Reverend Professor June Boyce-Tillman, Faculty of Arts, and Dr Charly Ryan, from the Faculty of Education, Health and Social Care at the University of Winchester, supervised Dr Beadell during his thesis.

“One of the three examiners, with considerable experience in this area, said that this was one of the best and most exciting theses he had ever examined,” said Reverend Professor Boyce-Tillman. “The University is excited about its venture into professional doctorates as it values its relationship with the professional world. We look to enable practical innovation and also to reward people who have made outstanding contributions to their profession.”

Panjazz International brings together existing and aspiring musicians from Hampshire with others from the Western Cape and Grahamstown in South Africa and Calcutta and Goa in India. Its aim is to use performance as a vehicle for supporting and creating communities on a local, national and international basis, with a focus on opportunities for young people. Its musical genres include Bollywood, Caribbean Calypso and South African Township Jazz.

Dr Beadell set out his unique approach to developing the talents of young musicians and instilling in them a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity in his thesis Panjazz International: A Powerful Model for Change.

As well as scrutinising the theoretical merits of Dr Beadell’s work, the examiners saw him lead a public workshop and direct a sell-out concert at Winchester Discovery Centre.

This new qualification is one of several being introduced by the University of Winchester to recognise students’ excellence in professional practice. Other professional doctorates offered by the University include the Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing), Doctor of Creative Arts (Performing Arts), Doctor of Education and Doctor of Theology and Practice.

Dr Beadell will receive his professional doctorate during the University of Winchester’s Graduation ceremonies held between 15-18 October.
