A trailblazing learning bubble and £30,000 medical mannequin were the stars of a groundbreaking health event.
Wrexham Assembly member Lesley Griffiths, the Welsh Minister for Local Government, joined Glyndŵr University Health Sciences department for a day of workshops, assessments and demonstrations at the Mold Road campus.
Academic Head Pam Hope welcomed dozens of health professionals and students, who toured the University and found out more about new courses on offer this September.
They also spent time in the Immersive Learning Environment – a large dome which creates different virtual scenarios – and watched practical sessions featuring the METIman mannequin.
Debbie Roberts, Reader in Nursing, said the event was a major success and showcased what the Health Sciences team can offer new students and existing medical professionals.
She said: “The Immersive Learning Environment is used a lot for education purposes with schools but we can take it a stage further and use it for clinical applications, to recreate a ward environment, the inside of someone’s body, recreate temperatures and other things we’ve never been able to do before.
“It’s really leading-edge and as well as adding value to our Health and Foundation degrees is also attracting Computing students, who can learn how to create this kind of virtual environment.”
She added: “The dome and METIman together offers something very different and there are external agencies interested in working with us. We could, for example, create a battlefield scenario as the METIman is like a real human being, originally designed by the American military to recreate blast injuries.
“We use him in an innovative way, rolling scenarios in which we help students to learn from their practice. If we put the METIman in the Immersive Learning Environment it takes us to a whole new level – it’s at the cutting edge.”
The event also featured clinical examinations, communication around dementia, CPR, how to break bad news and assessment of a wound.
The Health Sciences department has a Clinical Diagnostics module starting in September and new Health and Social Care and Health and Wellbeing courses.
