Professor Joy Carter, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, has been announced as the new Chair of GuildHE.

“I am delighted to be appointed as the new Chair of GuildHE. It is more important than ever to make sure that smaller, specialist, higher education institutions have a voice within the sector,” commented Professor Carter.

As well as being the new Chair of GuildHE, Professor Carter is also Chair of the Cathedrals Group of Universities and a Board Member and Director of Universities UK. Other national roles include Chair of the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC), and Board Member of both the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). She is also a member of the HEFCE Leadership, Governance and Management Strategic Advisory Committee, and a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on FE and Skills.

Professor Carter was appointed as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Winchester in April 2006. Prior to joining Winchester, Professor Carter was Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Glamorgan. She also worked as Dean of Science (1999-2002) and Professor of Environmental Geochemistry and Health at the University of Derby, and Reader in Environmental Geochemistry and Health at the University of Reading.

Professor Carter will take over as Chair of GuildHE when Professor Ruth Farwell’s term as Chair ends in November 2013.

Professor Farwell, Vice-Chancellor of Buckinghamshire New University, welcomed the appointment. Professor Farwell has served as Chair for two terms, since August 2009.

“Joy will make an excellent Chair of GuildHE,” said Professor Farwell. “I know that Joy shares the values of GuildHE members as specialist, student-focused, high-quality teaching institutions with an important contribution to the sector.

“I wish Joy well in working with Andy Westwood and the team to take forward GuildHE’s objectives, and would also add the pleasure I have taken from the role, which has been two-fold in the insight I have been able to provide in the sector and also use for the benefit of Buckinghamshire New University.”

Andy Westwood, Chief Executive Officer of GuildHE, said: “I’m sure all GuildHE members will join me in welcoming Joy as the next Chair of GuildHE. She has already contributed much in her role as Vice-Chair, and her knowledge of the sector and leadership experience will stand GuildHE in good stead for the future.”
