Research Fortnight reports that small institutions, and Norwich University the Arts in particular, while receiving a small amount of the UK’s overall research funding, do achieve a competative rate of return. Click here to read the full story.

This follows on from University Alliance’s report, Funding research excellence: Research group size, critical mass and performance offering evidence that ‘quality is a driver of scale, and not vice versa’, and that metrics devised to reward critical mass reward neither excellence nor productivity. Mark Leach, UA Policy Advisor, also defended the principal of excellence over size in the Guardian on 12th July, in an article entitled: ‘The research funding debate: Why size doesn’t matter’.

HESA data also showed that small and specialist instituitons do extremely well when it comes to graduate employability.
