The Yorkshire Women’s History Network, which holds its inaugural conference on Saturday, welcomes members from across the region, men and women from all walks of life who have an interest in women’s history.

Professor Karen Sayer, Programme Leader for History at Leeds Trinity, is coordinating the event. She said, “Women’s history has always been about the hands-on practice of history, so this network is for anyone with an interest in the subject at any level.”

“Women were largely hidden from history until the 1970s, in terms of where they were placed in society and also because of the choices made by historians, so the study of women’s history has been a growth area in recent decades.”

“This new network will be a great facility for Yorkshire’s historians. It offers the opportunity to meet people with similar interests, pick up tips on research, find out about sources and archives, and share experiences.”

The theme of the conference is “Women on Others/ Women as Others”. The keynote speaker is Professor Alison Oram of Leeds Metropolitan University, who will deliver a paper entitled They called each other ‘darling’: Female Sexualities and Same-Sex Desire in Postwar Britain.

The conference will include a display from the Abbey House Museum in Leeds and an exhibition entitled “Women peacemakers” courtesy of Bradford Peace Museum. There will also be a session dedicated to discussing future plans for the network.

The conference takes place on Saturday 25 June from 9.15am to 4.30pm at Leeds Trinity University College, Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth, Leeds LS18 5HD. For more information contact Professor Karen Sayer on k.sayer@leedstrinity.ac.uk or call 0113 2837212.
