The University of Winchester builds on its status as a leading provider of high-quality teacher education and development with the creation of a new research centre.

The Centre for Research into Teaching and Teacher Education – in the Faculty of Education, Health and Social Care at the University – aims to explore policy and practice in this area; host seminars and conferences; and coordinate, commission and share research to support professionals working in and around schools, as well as education policy makers.

“The University of Winchester has been a top-quality provider of teacher training since its inception 175 years ago, and the Teacher Development department is ranked as ‘Outstanding’ by Oftsed,” said Dr Wayne Veck, Faculty Head of Research at the University of Winchester. “Our newly established Centre builds on this heritage and aims to promote the relationship between teacher education and educational research, to ensure the latest research can play its key role in guiding and informing real-world policy and practice.”

The new Centre is led by Dr Veck and Dr Janice de Sousa, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Social Care. Members of the Centre – which include academics from the Teacher Development and Education Studies departments at the University – have already been working with schools in The Gambia, schools in disadvantaged areas of the UK, Winchester Discovery Centre and armed forces families to develop research and share best practice.

The Centre launch (15 March) explored the role of the teacher in gathering, identifying and working with relevant evidence in an inaugural seminar, titled Teachers as Researchers, delivered by Professor Richard Pring.

Professor Pring is a world-leading expert on educational theory and practice. He directed the one million pound six-year Nuffield Review of 14-19 Education and Training and is currently involved in the centenary celebrations of John Dewey’s Democracy and Education. Publications include John Dewey: Philosopher of Education for the 21st Century and Philosophy of Educational Research.
