The British Academy is inviting proposals from UK-based and overseas researchers and their partners, particularly in the Global South, to develop projects related to Early Childhood Development. This call is part of a new round of research opportunities offered by the British Academy as part of funding received from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) in partnership with the Department for International Development (DfID). Awards are of 18 months in duration.

Aims

The purpose of this interdisciplinary research programme is to fund the evidence that will inform the policies and interventions that will transform the life chances and destinies of children in their early years in lower- and middle-income countries. This Scheme will allow UK and overseas researchers, working with their partners in the Global South where relevant, to undertake projects to deliver research excellence with development impact. Research will be problem-focused and interdisciplinary, bringing together relevant disciplines to tackle the problem for maximum impact. Projects will need to demonstrate an innovative and interdisciplinary approach yielding new conceptual understanding in the field of early childhood development.

Eligibility requirements

The principal applicant must hold a permanent position at an eligible research or higher education institution, which can be in the UK or overseas, and applicants are also encouraged to include Co-Applicants from the Global South. Both PIs and Co-Applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status. The applicant must either be in a permanent position at the institution, or have a fixed term position for the duration of the award.

Value and Duration

The value of the award is set at a maximum of £350,000. Funding can be used to support the time of the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators involved in directing the project, postdoctoral research assistance, travel, fieldwork and related expenses, and networking costs. Awards are funded on a full economic costs basis of 100%, to include university costs in hosting and supporting the research team.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online using the British Academy’s electronic Grant Application and Processing (eGAP) system.

Application Deadline: Wednesday, 21 June 2017 (5pm UK time)
