A major EU-funded exhibition, hosted by the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) and Ecole Supérieure d’Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen (ESADHaR), will open at the UCA Canterbury’s Herbert Read Gallery on September 13, 2013 with a private viewing on September 12.

The exhibition ‘Limber: Spatial Painting Practices’ will present a group of international artists who explore and expand painting through a constructed 3D materiality. The exhibition will engage with the history of painting, the increasing dominance of visual structures and the growing influence of architecture, fashion and design.

The exhibition has been curated by Cherry Smyth and Jost Münster, who is also a lecturer at UCA in Canterbury, with works by artists Katie Bell USA, Ian Bottle UK, Simon Callery UK, Jim Lee USA, Irene van de Mheen NL, Guillermo Mora ES, Jost Münster GER, Ian Pedigo USA and Elodie Seguin FR.

Rafau Sieraczek, Reseach and Enterprise Projects Officer at UCA said: “This collaborative exhibition between the UCA and ESADHaR serves as an example of how an intercultural dialogue between two art schools can take place and, through its fresh and unique composition, clearly demonstrate the benefits of such endeavours.”

Cherry Smyth, co-curator of Limber, said: “UCA is delighted to respond to the challenges and crises in contemporary painting with this exhilarating new group show which follows and consolidates the trends across several continents to question paintings’ function and form.”

The exhibition forms part of the Inter-regional Culture led Regeneration (ICR) project led by the UCA, which aims to stimulate the growth of the creative and cultural industries in the south coast of England and Par-de-Calais, Normandy and Brittany in France. It is co-financed by the European Union INTERREG IVA Channel programme and UCA’s Research and Enterprise department.

Limber will take place in the UK at the Herbert Read Gallery from September 13 to October 12, 2013. The exhibition will then travel to France, where it will be based at the Grandes Galleries de L’ESADHaR in Rouen from November 21 to December 20, 2013.
