Temporal Connections

Research Student Conference and Exhibition

University for the Creative Arts – to be held at Farnham Maltings

Conference date: 27 March 2018

Exhibition date: 24 – 29 March 2018 (Private View 27 March 2018)

The theme of the conference is Temporal Connections, exploring the relationships between culture and time through our practice. The aim is to create a discussion around the different issues and aspects of research currently undertaken by PhD students at UCA.

One of the most fundamental traits of human communication is the ability to express time (Klein and Pi, 2009:1), but time is not a uniform notion. There are different concepts of time in physics, biology, psychology, anthropology and philosophy. The way we think about and experience time is shaped by genetics and our social and cultural experiences.

Temporal connections link our distant past, our nostalgia for the present and our fear or anticipation of the future. Critically engaging with history, memory, culture, tradition and modernity post-graduate students from UCA create synergies between our conscious and unconscious perceptions of time.

Proposals are invited which address but are not limited to the following themes:

• The relationship between culture and time and cultural attitudes to time.

• The synergy between memory and history.

Our perception of time through engagement with tradition and modernity.

The conference will explore contemporary doctoral research and will provide students with an opportunity to establish a dialogue that critically reflects upon current research in art and design. By bringing together the varied methodological approaches, practices and theoretical positions that characterise postgraduate research, the conference aims to be a space to engage with peers about the nature of new knowledge.

There will be an evening reception in the exhibition space following the conference.
