The University of Cumbria is introducing its innovative Institute for Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS) with an event at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society in London. The event on 28 May is entitled Adventures in Sustainability and will include stories from explorer and broadcaster Paul Rose, cofounder of the band Faithless Jamie Catto, environmental travel writer Kate Rawles and Wild Swimming author Daniel Start, amongst other adventurous speakers.

Also in attendance will be Lord Hastings of Scarisbrick, who has a special interest in the global economy and Professor Peter Strike, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cumbria. Professor Strike comments: “As the world becomes smaller, and our futures intertwine, we need globally responsible leadership. With the new Institute for Leadership and Sustainability, the University of Cumbria commits to educating the leaders we need.”

The institute forms part of the university’s business school and is based at its Ambleside campus. Professor Jem Bendell, director of IFLAS explains:

“The challenge of social, environmental and economic sustainability requires ‘sustainable leadership’; ways of relating that promote change and is mutually beneficial for the person, organisation, stakeholders and world at large.

“The institute is being launched due to the success of the university’s online MBA, which is offered in conjunction with Robert Kennedy College, and over the past two years has become the world’s largest sustainability MBA.

“By offering postgraduate degrees, research programmes and global networks, IFLAS will support a new generation of sustainable leaders; well-balanced professionals for a better-balanced world.”
